Wish I Knew You When I Was Young
If only I knew you when I was young,
maybe love’s melodies would be sung-
We’d begin a life together so sweet,
inhale your beauty through each lung,
you’d sweep me off my delicate feet.
It seems that wishes are for the weary,
a way to escape a life of the leery-
If moonbeams could’ve brought us together,
maybe my eyes wouldn’t be so teary,
and we’d grow old and gray until forever.
When I was young I wish we were in love,
soaring freely like an ivory dove-
We’d laugh and stand a fighting chance,
a gift of hope from the angels up above;
a life we would’ve lived of passion and romance.
Youth had its way and I knew not of you,
it gave you innocence and made me blue-
When God created time, I should’ve been
your one and only dream come true-
Oh, sweet man…if only I knew you when.
