[I think this poem may have been inspired by seeing the number of wilted flower arrangements at funerals I conducted as a young pastor. It was written about the mid-1960s. I included it in my first poetry chapbook, "The Lady in the Pink Hat," Candor Press, 1969.]

Rancid lilies stream the rim of wicker baskets like wilted soldiers rank and file Fatigued and sweaty They salute a mournful throng with dampened pistols and burnished brass. Hate every passion screaming for a drink of water in the searing heat of attention. Stack their arms and fall in blessed oblivion.

Incredibly powerful poem, Milton. It is worth several re-reads to appreciate the fine, crisp imagery. The symbolic power of wilted flowers with the link to soldiers is poetry at its best. Sincerest regards, Brian

Superb poesy, Milt. I can just feel those limp blooms... Now don't get too mad at me for this tongue-in-cheek 'brainstorm,' BUT what if you turned the first letter of the title of this poem upside down? ~ Just sayin' (and prayin' you'll won't excommunicate me). ~ gw

Ah...very clever, G.W. Very clever, indeed. BTW, do you know what "milt" is? Most people don't, so I tell them that's how they can remember my name. I know you're going to look it up now! G.W. I would NEVER excommunicate you!

It is an excellent Poem to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day and honor those who died defending freedom. Unfortunately, many of the young generations don't know anything about it besides getting another day off.

So true, Lasaad. But, I think it is an opportunity for teaching. An important opportunity, I must add.
