Why Your Cities Burn, Part IV
...After a bit her cries died down,
everyone could see she was dead,
a small head hung between her thighs,
mother and son covered in red.
He had seen so much callousness,
but this he just couldn’t believe,
it was after seeing this horror
Gobayth decided to leave.
Of course, it took some time to plan,
in the day the watch was intense,
men along the perimeter,
watchtowers to see the whole fence,
but at night things were more relaxed
when the slavess were all in the cage,
the guards drank freely and caroused,
abused slave girls of any age.
Just one would watch over the cage,
an older man, graying and fat,
they gave this guy the easy job,
he’d make hem regret doing that.
Because the man did fall asleep
sometimes leaning against the bars,
Gobayth formed a simply plan,
still weak, but with rage in his heart.
During the day, while out working,
when none of the guards were nearby,
he found a rope used to drag cars,
and into I his pick did fly.
He tied the rope around his chest,
covered it with his filthy shirt,
and though the rough hemp rasped his skin,
he gladly suffered through the hurt.
At day’s end, when they brought them back,
he moved to the cage's broad front,
crouching near where the fat guard slept,
to wait there for the setting sun.
It came, Gobayth waited still,
for sleep to come upon the guards,
and that did not take very long,
they tended to drink rather hard.
When most had stumbled to their huts,
and only the nightwatch remained,
Gobayth untied the coarse rope,
and set out to avenge their pain.
The fat guard was in drunken sleep,
his head resting against the bars,
Gobayth moved right behind him,
but before he could get that far,
eyes of other slaves fixed on him,
he gestured for them not to speak,
said, “Wake the others and we will
soon regain the freedom we seek.”
The men went about doing that
as Gobayth stretched out his hands
through the bars, around the guard’s neck,
then pulled tight to throttle the man.
The guard awoke with a hard thrash,
but no clear sound came from his throat,
work-hardened arms pulled with great force,
the guard could just sputter and choke.
It took just half of a minute
for the guard’s final, dying dance,
then Gobayth grabbed the body
and searched the pockets on his pants.
He found great keys made of iron,
quickly forced them into the lock,
cried, “Get the picks! Attack the gate!
We’re too many for the to stop!”
