Whistlers Mother

It should by now be evident Whistler’s mother is very patient. For two hundred years, or close, she’s been profiled in that pose. And, as far as any expert knows, she’s never changed to other clothes much less never took a break for nature’s sake. (Did her artist son plan it that way?) And – as artless as it is to say – are we justified to guess she found relief in that black dress? Mrs. Whistler Responds I grant my back does cause me pain, but has anyone yet heard me complain? Two hundred years of sitting stiff, I should by now have rigor mortis. And though my bum is now insensible, I’ve never budged to make it comfortable. And, if you must know, my underwear contains nothing but my English rear!
