Whip-poor-will, whip-poor-will, whip-poor-will all night Security, assurance, delight Defender of the small nest Or out on his quest For his mate. Rest What's his fate Will he pass this test Conquer, mate, rear a success Life isn't easy, some fright, much delight Whip-poor-will, whip-poor-will, whip-poor-will, all night

Sorry I couldn't give this one a win even though it was so nice. Many poets forgot to use the middle word as part of the title. I appreciate the effort you made writing on this sweet bird.

Like men, each bird and beast undertakes the struggle to face the challenges of life in finding a mate and guarding its nest. The Whip-poor- will seems to be your favorite bird, dear Sara. Beautifully penned poem.

Thank you, Gershon. I am sure that I have only touched on the information about a whip-poor-will. I guess since they are nightjars someone would have to stay up late or have cameras about to see exactly what they do. I wonder about birds and how they manage to survive in this world of uncertainty. Thanks for the visit, Gershon. Your visits are uplifting. Sara K

Sara, your poem so eloquently conveys the meaning of the bird's message, be it about seeking love or defending the nest. Your line structure is flawless, and the manner you've written the prologue and conclusion is superb. Thanks for your comment on my page.

Tom, I probably have written a number of these that at least mention the whip-poor-will..They say when one comes in your yard that someone's death is imminent. I don't know who will go first my husband or me. I enjoy hearing them and they have been around our home since we moved here. I like their call that I hear at evening as soon as darkness come and in the morning at about daybreak. Thanks for stopping by. Sara K

Whether defender of the nest or on quest for romance--your poem reverberates in the bird's theme brilliantly, Sara. Life is not easy---some fright--much delight--so true and well said.
