Which One - Tremulous

Written: August 18, 2026, for a contest sponsored by Matt Caliri Quote: "Two of the greatest gifts we can give our children are roots and wings." — By Hodding Carter
***************** You ask me, tremulous, eyes as green harvest fields waiting for a pantomime. Love is not a ledger, not a lapidary stone weighed against another gemstone. It is a storm, a maelstrom that swathes each soul in its own salient light. When you are away— lost to your bright horizons— my heart quaffs distance, longing for your return, and in that absence I love you beyond prosaic, until you stand back at the doorway. When you are sick, fevered, fragile, I remember the maxim of care, mercy mandate calls! How love becomes adamantine, an impregnable shield until you heal. Despite friction, when worlds clash and ignite, I'm not biased, but when you are well— frolicking, laughing— I love you no less. Love is seraphic, a synergy of souls, a scatheless nexus where each child shines akin to citrine, ruby-lotus, orchid, hydrangea— different blooms, same orchard. We are the moorland, where each child is a flower growing from a womb-seed Seasons turn their faces upward, with your frame and name, rooted in the same clay, savoring the same heart-buffet, my life drifts and sways. So hear me: you're drastically beloved, a vibrant gem, a cynosure treasure I cannot sever affection, cannot trace a commotion for our iron-clad devotion. Love is an Ouroboros— endless, with no starting each of you a vital part. If one flame burns brighter, it is only because the wind leans toward it. But the fire itself— the whole fire— is yours, equally and eternally, without epithet, without end.

Heartiest congratulations dear poet on your win in this contest with a superb pem expressing a parent`s love for his or her children so vividly and brightly. It is difficult to choose which stanzas appeal to me more, so much each of them is beatufully carved with glowing words and lovely imagery. Sending you the blessings of light.

A deeply heartfelt free-verse meditation on impartial parental love, rich with luminous imagery and an expansive emotional reach. The recurring gemstones, flowers, fire, roots, and horizons create a beautiful tapestry, while the final image of “the whole fire” gives the poem a particularly moving, enduring sense of equal devotion. Congratulations on your podium win. 🥳👏💐

Remarkable job, SP, placing 5th out of 33 entries! Your word wizardy is without compare. Truly an experience to partake in. Also, you had me a "hyrdangea" (my own mother's favorite flower).

Simply wonderful. This is a gem l read over and again. How poetic and powerful, convincing and logical.. ! Your parental love stays unconditional and in sickness and failure, it gains wider dimensions. "We are a moorland where each child is a flower, growing from a womb seed." How true! This goes into my FAV. ♥️ A sure winner.👍
