Where Whippoorwills Weep
A scarlet sun singes the edge of Earth,
its receding rays giving shadows girth.
And darkness swiftly spreads over the ground,
swallowing the last lingering light found.
A dying sun sends shadows forth to creep
through the undergrowth, where whippoorwills weep.
And dusk gathers them tightly together,
loosely leashed to a nocturnal tether.
Ebony pools begin to ebb and flow
as the day shuts down, and time starts to slow.
And twilight welcomes the starry skies back,
glittering against a backdrop of black.
Silhouettes shackle shadows to the night,
awaiting Dawn and Her first rays of light.
And yet, as the moon rises, they disperse
to explore new horizons to traverse.
