When Music Dies

“The Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost - They caught the last train for the coast the day the music died, and they were singing Bye Bye Miss American Pie. . .” From Don McLean’s “American Pie" When Music Dies How short was rock and roll’s time on this earth as baby boomers’ kids grew up with mirth. Three legends in a plane crash met their demise at that era’s end . . . but new stars would arise. Diverse was their music in those changing times. Social themes resonated in their lyrics’ rhymes. Yet through it all, the beat kept going on and on. Even from abroad it came in this brand new dawn. The 60’s generation also came and went, but music only really dies when passion’s spent. Wow, a poem about the music I grew up with. Buddy Holly’s music influenced so many artists who came after him. And he was a good Texas boy... thanks for the memories. I still listen to the music of the 50’s and 60’s mostly. John

I'm glad you commented on my poem, it gave me an opportunity to ready some of your work. This is really a great poem as I was a young boy during this time. It so sad that we lost such great talent. Who knows what more they could have added to society.

The twists and turns and ins and outs of mystic melodies. Console the soul and touch the heart as ration remedies. Conclusive sense of recompense decides the fate of many. And then in silence, answers come from heaven's rain of pennies.

A bit before my time but I am, of course, familiar with the song (and still thoroughly enjoy it). The video was an interesting watch - I knew there were plenty of pop culture references contained within, but others did surprise me. I like your take, especially the second stanza!! Best of luck in the contest! Regards, John.

Hey - nice poem - especially the last few lines! Just watched an interview with Bob Weir of the Great Dead done by Dan Rather. Do you remember the song by the Buffalo Springfield "For What it's worth? The primary takes place on the 12th in my neighborhood on the 12th and I am going to vote. Hope it does some good! I am going to Cold Springs with my lady friend on Saturday. Also I am looking for some more ESL work. Keep it up! Peace & Love Matthew Anish

Sober words that summon feelings and memories of those times when I would cheerfully buy an album when I needed food. Around 1980 with Dire Straits and Sting I felt it dying. How odd, i thought and think so still. How stirring is this poem, as I sit here pondering at its behest.

Excellent Andrea. I think there is a song in all hearts waiting to be sung. Music doesn't really die it just changes a bit. Some I don't understand but then I'm a Huey Lewis fan. Great write. Good luck in the contest. God Bless, JB

I think music never dies, like poetry, is there, sometimes to be re-discovered, styles change, but the essence of music lives on, loved this!

like Dylan said, "the times are changing"... of the three who died I believe only Buddy Holly would have truly written a lot of music we would never hear...good luck in the contest
