Whatever the Cause
From outside, I hear you calling me,
with an urgency not heard before.
I go to the window, but can't see,
I run downstairs, and out the door.
It is misty, the evening light is dim.
I don't see your familiar shadow,
only the outline of a dead tree limb.
Your voice, now distant and hollow.
I call to you as I move along.
If I hear you, I can follow the sound.
Every direction that I go, is wrong,
I fall to my knees on the ground.
My heart is pounding, I need to pause,
catch my breath before I continue on.
You need me, whatever the cause,
but the sound of your voice, is gone.
I rise to my feet to start my search anew.
I falter and stumble ahead.
Sobbing, I frantically look for you.
Until I wake up in my bed.
It was another dream of you,
my hand shakes as I reach for the light.
How many nights am I to get through,
knowing you are forever out of sight.
