Guns fell silent, nervous heads appeared, one by one from the trenches climbed, for a short while no-one feared, some spoke while others mimed. They kicked a football, hugged fellow man. Peace to all. We can stop In memory of the Christmas truce in 1914, when men from both sides, for a brief period, forgot their differences. Viv, congratulations on your win in my contest, your poem touched me deeply, war is such a terrible thing and to imagine both sides putting aside their guns even if just for a little while, brings a tear.

Yes, Andrea, the words 'Christmas' and 'war' tend to bring the 1914 footy match to mind. I look forward to seeing your composition, as always, Viv x

... and then the guns fell silent and they played football, a story I will never forget from my history lessons at school. I had thought of writing on the same theme but there is nothing I could write that would beat this. Good luck in the contest:-) hugs Jan xx

Vimy ridge was one of the highlights for me, Arthur, I think it is the most beautiful and poignant memorial anywhere. Stunning. Also, everyone should witness the last post being sounded at the Menin gate in their lifetime. Equally moving. Regards, Viv

Thanks, Arthur, I was privileged to walk the ground where one of the matches took place while on a Battlefield tour of the Somme a couple of years back. Regards, Viv
