WAKE HER WHEN SEPTEMBER ENDS

Eleven months without physical harm
is a blessing she cradles in her arms.
One more month remains of living unchained.
Soon life might lose the dread that threads alarm.

As his time serving overseas dwindles,
her coerced endurance holds less kindle.
Her thought onslaught is worry fraught and serves
images that swell in her heart and nerves.

She lives aware that one second can swerve
a life into despair no one deserves.
He might die or be maimed at the finish line.
In her mind, September is a landmine.

Fears make wishes to become unaware,
be numb to thirty more days of warfare.
She knows as a premature lamenter,
she wants sleep until the end of September.

CayCay you’ve captured the angst and feelings of many! The third line is especially emotive and I can’t imagine if my husband or son/daughter was in harms way in the military! Best wishes in the contest!

The anxious agony you describe is an element of the human condition familiar to all. A loved one engaged in warfare; will he/she survive? Will the outcome be relief, or a veil of tears? Your words will always be relevant as long as humanity endures. Robert

I can sense the anguish of wives whose husbands are in the warfront. Any day a calamity can fall into their lives in the form of an attack changing their destiny in unanticipated ways. They are always on tenterhooks. A powerful poem of a wife's angst. To her the one month, September is a landmine.

This is so personal and deep, a longing for a husband placed far away in military duties... Well expressed angst, CayCay😊 just wanted you to know that I always cherish your wholehearted comments on my poetry🥰

Sounds like you've been there... My wife and I -- esp. my wife --- felt this way when our youngest son was serving in the Israel Defense Forces. He survived... But now he's got reserve duty every year. Last year it was almost 90 days. Yuck. Even the soldiers who are not killed or maimed suffer. I say, let Netanyahu fight whoever's leading the damn Palestinians personally. Then he can take on the mullahs of Iran. That'll cure his 'war fever.'
