On Christmas Day as she dines alone at a table with many an empty chair, she remembers loved ones she had known who once were sitting there. In flashes their faces begin to appear. There’s John who was the first to leave, her spouse who smiles with holiday cheer, and Mom who passed on Christmas Eve. But more powerful than seeing them, are the voices that begin to speak. Reminding her to think of Bethlehem, Dad’s deep tones are never weak. Witty Chris, Jeanette and now Marianne are telling jokes, toasting the holiday. Then all at once they’re laughing, the entire clan; not one is at a loss for what to say. Hearing these voices, she finds great solace, though some might think she’s mad. For listening to them eases her loneliness, brightening the aura in which she’s clad. And well she knows it won’t be long before her spirit joins them on the other side. Chairs all empty, she’ll lead them in song, a joyful chorus caroling eternally every Yuletide. * December 3, 2018 Entry for Constance's Christmas Poem contest.

Hi Carolyn, Our time on earth is all too short. Loved ones leave, and for them we grieve, until all over again, its our time to leave. Your poem is wonderful Carolyn! Imagine how many old people in retirement villages will be spending Christmas alone! An awesome write! Love and hugs, Jennifer.

You're correct about elderly people who spend too much time alone with no one to care for them. It's a topic dear to my heart. Thanks for reading, Jennifer.

Oh! Those empty chairs bring back so many memories, Carolyn. Though we never forget those who passed away, at special occasions we tend to reminisce more than usual. One day even our chair will be empty! Your take on 'voices' is lovely and touching. ~ Hugs // paul

It is a practice in my family to set places at the table and leave empty chairs for those who have passed. My grandmother immigrated here from Poland, so it may be a practice there. Thanks for reading, Paul. I'll visit your page.

Yes, Carolyn, so true. As we grow older and those we grew up with and adored pass away, we realize how even in our sadness at the loss our memories of their voices lives on. You’ve elegantly written of the sadness and the joy. Best wishes. Deb

We are blessed to have our loved ones, but only for a limited time. So the joy they once gave us can be celebrated. Thank you for your sweet comment, Deb.

Memories, such haunting yet beautiful nostalgia, the end of an era... I felt the sting of tears in my eyes by the end of your first stanza, Carolyn. You've composed an exquisite poem whose sad spirit touches my heart truly and deeply. Best wishes for a win, my lovely friend.. ~Susan

I will probably be home alone this year, Susan, though sometimes I drive more than a thousand miles to be with family. So many have passed now. Lots of empty chairs. Thanks for reading.

My late wife and her clan all had a penchant for dying on Christmas, or some other holiday, but times are changing. My grandfather was one of 16 children, my mother one of ten, I was one of six, my daughter one of two, and her daughter the only grandchild of both grandparents, so your photo clearly illustrates the future. Well done, and good luck, Carolyn! Aloha! Rico

You see this so often Carolyn, once large families whittled down to just a few or even one member. You often think of them, more so at Christmas time. Good luck. Tom.

When I was five and my grandfather died, I wondered why my grandmother set a place for him and left an empty chair. Now I understand. Thanks for reading, Tom.

I like your family setting for this poem Carolyn..and as I read your poem, I heard the voices emanating from your words. While there is a sad tone, there is joy around the table, apt for the holiday season. My very best to you for a win in the contest.

Thank you, Vijay. These "voices" can actually help a lonely person get through Christmas without being too sad. We just have to look back and remember the loving people who have touched our lives.

Beautifully sad Carolyn, the thought of a table that was once so full of life now only has one guest is heartbreaking. But as long as she can hear their voices and remember the happy times, then I guess maybe it is not as empty as it seems. Best wishes in the contest.

I think the first time we're alone on holidays is the hardest. It does get easier as time passes and the "voices" help. I like to think they can hear me too. Thanks for your kind comments, my friend.

I would guess it's in the making...imagine...You can virtually bring who ever you want back, converse with them, share Christmas dinner, say all the things you did not say before. They will spend sometime with you as in virtual reality... In the future, even emotions will be stored and triggered...by responses... it's not far fetched...

Gee, I hadn't thought of a "virtual Christmas," Arturo. It's sounds like a great idea for a poetry contest. Thanks for mentioning it. Will visit your page to see what's new!
