Unsung Pioneer
Glistening snow-like wisps are lining
The old woman’s aging face,
A face with road map trails to tell the tale
Of a lady who stands with grace.
A woman of love and courage in life,
She crossed the prairie with her man,
Choices did not avail her – she must
Do whatever he planned.
Babies came and a few became angels,
While her calico threadbare became,
Finally arriving at a prairie clearing
That will bear her husband’s name.
He would build a church; she would sing His praise,
A little town would grow around,
He took the bows, she was glad he did,
Her part was to make love abound.
Her fingers now are gnarled and cannot
Sew and cook and clean,
Still she stands tall with eyes peering far,
Symbol of pride and esteem.
