Uncle Harry Mothilal
last night, on the phone, albeit in South Africa
uncle Harry - now 82 - repeated what my dad said
(My dad, Harry's older brother, late since 2005)
Recalled for us the days on the farm
Before the dreaded apartheid law, GROUP AREAS ACT:
forced removals of non-European folk from "white areas"
Dad had to start factory work at 35, when the farm was taken
you know the creative term for robbery on that scale -
EMINENT DOMAIN - arrogant agreed & gain - so Harry said:
before we went to school, the two of us loaded sugarcane;
then your dad would put the chains on. the truck was done; then
milk the cows. Had breakfast, before the long walk to school ...
good to hear how my dad took on the lion's share of work
protecting younger bro Harry (I had assumed: alcohol talk)
when my dad would recall the pain of being removed from the farm

But if things went "south among the partners," the Indian lost his investment and life's dreams. Harry lost his thriving clothing business in Natal Midlands, Howick, that way around the 1980s! Biography in South Africa ...
