Notes About The Poem

two such separate worlds

I love summers
going with whim,
being with him.

What can compare
to no schedule, no plans,
the cool of martinis
or beachside bikinis?

an underdressed me,
outright hedonism,
shapeless Freedom.

I love Fall
The hustle of classes
their immediate demands
the need for fierce focus,
and the challenge of exams.

The overprepared me,
intense, mental involvement,
a future, academically solvent.

two such separate worlds
that can never collide
which is actually better?
I can't decide.

Both are simply systems with costs
the texture of one, depends on the other
and neither state is fully sustainable.

It’s amazing how quickly the transition from summer to fall occurs. Like it’s an actual switch that gets tripped. Not at all like the other three seasons. At least not to me. You’d think that for someone whose carefree summer vacations switched to intense fall schoolwork are long gone, the change wouldn’t be so noticeable, but no, it still hits like a 100-pound wack on the back. And I won’t even avail myself of the pleasure of wearing knit dresses and boots anymore. / 💛

This year it WAS like throwing a switch - and I'm loving it! School's started and if the first week is any indication, this master's degree is gonna be a cakewalk. Of course, now I've cursed myself. 🙃
