Truths
The truths I hold to must align
with tenets of the Word,
the promises and standards which
from childhood I have heard.
When I have failed to follow them,
they’re stored in memory.
They, for that time, don’t rule my heart;
still, from them I’m not free.
If I could quote straight from the Book
the Gospels and the Psalms
but seldom lived by what they teach—
with no apparent qualms--
you’d say I am a hypocrite
or worse, and you’d be right.
The truths by which I claim to live,
in those I should delight.
"Word" and "Book" refer to the Holy Bible.
The Gospels are Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
