Trembling In the Shadows
There she sat, eyes pinpoints of light, trembling in the shadows
As her friends frolicked carefree, over hill, dale and meadow
My wife and I beckoned to her, "Please come and eat" ---
Her story wordlessly told, devouring leftovers like a treat
Then curled up on the couch, contentment written 'cross her face ...
Fell asleep for the evening without first saying grace
My wife and I each shared a wink and stifled a yawn ---
We'd renew her acquaintance at the break of dawn
But when we awakened, our night visitor had fled
Even a poor, starving kitten won't trade freedom for a bed
