Traditions

I’m not at all religious But when holidays roll ‘round, I follow the traditions To which I have long been bound. I cook and bake the recipes Passed down from year to year And use my nicest dishes To improve the atmosphere. I even wear a skirt, although My husband wouldn’t care If I plopped down at the table In a tee and underwear. The rituals and customs That I learned of long ago Don’t reflect beliefs, but rather A connection to bestow.

Loved your write, ilene. The older I get, the more I value those connections with the past and with the community around me. It was nice to pass along some of those traditions to our kids, and nice to see them begin new ones of their own.

You know, those traditions are absolutely priceless. No less an authority than Rabbi Yaakov Kaminetsky, OBM, used to say that a long-held custom has the force of Rabbinic Law. And he was not given to hyperbole. So, here's to your keeping of tradition, ilene!! Blessings for the year ahead. (Soup mail, please). :) Gershon
