Tied and Tethered
I rage at formal poetry with
its Titanic grip on structure
iambic pentameter
syllable counts
measured cadence of rhythm like a song
trademark pauses
I'm on the wrong side of rhymed verse, its ostrich-like curse
Landscape of rules
iron ring of form
hoops to jump through
haystack of needles
I want to slam the door
break the rules
upend expectations
that tie my hands
that bend my pen
that crease my brow
Cavalier wishing
to write free verse
that makes heat possible
in words, unconventional
that litter the page
Wanted:
A wanton muse with a pulse that fertilizes the soil
of a writer's parched self
scriblings of rank sentiment
