Tied and Tethered

I rage at formal poetry with its Titanic grip on structure iambic pentameter syllable counts measured cadence of rhythm like a song trademark pauses I'm on the wrong side of rhymed verse, its ostrich-like curse Landscape of rules iron ring of form hoops to jump through haystack of needles I want to slam the door break the rules upend expectations that tie my hands that bend my pen that crease my brow Cavalier wishing to write free verse that makes heat possible in words, unconventional that litter the page Wanted: A wanton muse with a pulse that fertilizes the soil of a writer's parched self scriblings of rank sentiment Poem composed: June 7, 2021

Hi Constance, Thanks very much for your note. The poem is really a rant + I am surprised at its placement - completely unexpected. Best wishes, Brian

I like how you think, rules be damned. For me when I read poetry Ijust want to feel something. If not, what is the point?

Hello Richard, Thank you for the comment. Yes, rules constrain me. Free verse is free form + I can concentrate on the subject at hand. Best wishes, Brian

Thank you Belden. It is something of a rant of frustration + not to everyone's liking. Sincere good wishes, Brian

An interesting write Brian, the page is the poets stage, free verse or rhyme doesn't matter at all, if the reader is brought to tears or laughter the poets act has made a splash… Belle

Very well noted, Belle. Oh to make that poetical splash. Rhymed verse has me stymied. I just can't seem to find words that lift + illuminate. Thank you for the visit to my page + for your message. Cheers Brian
