this and that and thus and such

this and that and thus and such hearing, seeing, smell, taste, touch which will old age steal? not much just this and that and thus and such will I know beloved ones... lifelong sweetheart? daughter? sons? thanking those with whom I've dined not sure why they've been so kind in this home but not sure why who will hold me when I die? i'm imprisoned by my fear who will let me out of here? i have seen it far too much once sharp minds now losing touch no more plumb line left to clutch just this and that and thus and such

Love this my friend! I have been gone for years tho I still post my poems here, but saw this and was reminded of our friendship. I pray you are well - so much has happened - I’m working on book two now for launch in August (3 book contract with Wheelsong Books in UK), and much more! How are you? - Greg Barden

I was just thinking of you and came to see what you wrote last. Gosh it is going on two months. And I have not had a visit from you in over a year or more. Are you ok. Sure miss you , doodle-do.

As we grow older such nagging thoughts often come to plague. Memory loss is the greatest challenge we face in old age. However be assured that you have a sharp mind. There is no need of any fear for the time being though such things can happen in course of time. May God keep you safe and sane as before. Sending you blessings, dear John.

Hello dear John, my dear friend, it’s so compelling to read these words of yours. The simplicity, and yet the immense depth of these types of realizations - you do it so well, wearing your open heart on your sleeve. I value you and your words. Thank you for illuminating us again. Big hugs, blessings and all good thoughts to you and yours, Susan :)

Dear John, it’s hard when our memory goes, yes it’s true I’m one of those. I see my mother in me, she ended her life dreadfully. I just hope I’m never left all alone, but who knows how life goes. There’s just two sisters and my hubby, who has no one but me. That’s how it is for him and me.… Beryl

Dear friend, once again you have eloquently touched one of life's vibrating nerves! I have missed your writing - so happy I found this gem today. This summer has been beyond chaotic and I am so behind in answering emails - again! The questions you pose run through all human minds. Thank you for this special treat this am - a little fellowship! Sending you blessings for a sharp mind and healthy body for your beautiful soul, R&R bro! Still more time to enjoy baseball!

Such a beautiful comment... yes, a little shared moment in the fellowship hall. I understand your chaotic season, I've had a year or two of those! Loving the baseball season, though, hope you are too ~ John

Hi John, this is so sadly true for so many, when the memories goes so much goes with them, but you can still keep the love in your heart, I believe~

What a moving piece. My 88 year old dad has alzhiemers. It is crushing for me to deal with. I take it one day at a time with lots of tears in between. You've captured this loss so well. I really think you're title is a great encapsulation. Haven't seen you around. Hope you're OK.

Thank you for opening up your heart, Eileen. The impact is greatest when it's someone we care deeply about, with whom we have made a lifetime of sweet memories. I hope those memories are a balm to your hurting heart. God bless you ~ John (p.s. I am fine, just very busy with life)

You describe the brain disorder that sadly and slowly destroys memory, speech, cognitive skills and eventually, the ability to carry out even the simplest of tasks so well John.. Those isolated, islands of memory the sufferer is left with are based in reality and yet those bridges in between that the sufferer creates in an attempt to make sense of those islands are more often than not, not. It’s all so sad. I particularly like the line: "no more plumb line left to clutch". Perhaps a reference to not being able to think straight? Great work. Cheers - Gary

Dear Gary, in your line of work I know you've seen and experienced the gamut of the human condition. You are as compassionate as they come, and it shows every time you post or comment. Very grateful for you. Cheers ~ John

We've been binging on the show "This is us" of late. It depicts mom's (Rebecca) battle with Alzheimer's (or dementia). So terribly sad. I've known some who have suffered. It's harsh to watch. I understand your trepidation. Sober poem John

" this and that and thus and such", nice way to fill in the blanks. At our age we wonder. "who will hold me when I die"

Thank you for commenting, Eve. I try not to burden myself with worry, but these sort of questions do pop into my mind from time to time. Blessings, John
