They

I know this isn’t quite PC But if I had my way, The gender-fluid people Could not singularize “they.” The New York Times accepts it, Also making single “their.” For English teachers, such a use Is reason to despair. I try to understand those folks Who are not “he” or “she” And know that modern life demands That’s how it’s got to be. But let them form some pronouns Which don’t currently exist, Creative words that by the grammar Police won’t be dismissed. The world’s evolving, that’s for sure, And many things are strange, Yet I believe that certain rules Should not be forced to change.

Ha, ha! Just love the poem, and couldn't agree more. How about that law in N.Y. state which subjects landlords to a $250k fine for 'ignoring' the pronouns ze/hir when a tenant requests one be used?! What are people thinking (or drinking) these days anyway?!! ~ gw

The change couldn't come soon enough. We're no longer forced to specify male or female. But a new word would be better. I stopped putting hyphens between inlaw words; I was finding it ridiculous. I even got used to 'daughterinlaw'.

Ilene, that was really well stated and crafted. I had never looked at it that way and I wonder what pronoun could be created and used that made some sense. Any suggestions?

Maybe "xi," pronounced "zi." In the same article I read, Mx. was used as a title instead of Mr. or Ms. (although I'm not sure how that is pronounced).
