Then I Saw the Light Premiere Contest Winner

Too many years spent in depression buried beneath a pile of regrets pills of every color aside my glass, cuts of every size scabs included Broken pieces of my heart scattered from Newfoundland to Toronto I'd forgotten the taste of content and the sound of jabbering friends They tried to help me by taking me to therapy but I cried myself to sleep every time I spoke to him, about my childhood pain and the awful abuse One day I decided to go visit an old chapel that kept their side door open this kind woman let me in and ushered me into a back pew then left I felt a rush of panic, all I wanted was to run but then I began to talk the words spilled out of my heart, onto a crucifix of pewter and gold I told him all my secret fears and all the things my mind struggled with gazing upon that cross I suddenly realized that he'd been broken too On a crumpled piece of paper I scratched out three words " I choose life " then I left the chapel door open and walked out into the sun, alive... Its not like I cured myself all at once it took time, but I finally did it one day at a time , first I crawled, then I walked, then I saw the light. Brave and intense in its scope. I applaud your courage. "Onto a crucifix of pewter and gold" is a vibrant and powerful image. The tone of your poem is both dramatic and illusory.

Very emotive and expressive work. I can feel the pain of the person and the point of healing as well. I hope not your life and your struggle but just a topic or about someone you knew or was told this story by someone. Congrats on your win!! Sara

My Dear Poetic friend, I'm not here as much as I was, so I just now found your poetry again...This poem hit close, very close, beaten and abused as a child I still have a very hard time trusting or allowing anyone to get close, even those I keep close, it takes me a long time to invite anyone into my circle which I keep very small...maybe that's why I write...my first thought after reading your poem, Dear Poet

Dear Frederic so sorry to hear what happened to you . It takes a lifetime to recover from the scars of the past. Personally I think it makes us more sensitive and empathetic to others pain. My mother used to say those who have never suffered , cannot understand the pain of another. I always admired your sensitive poems Frederic, and always will, Thank you for taking the time to comment and sharing your feelings with me. It means so much, bless you

Hi Mystic, Your write moved me deeply. I found it so related. I suffered abuse as a child too. The light was what truly helped me.This is a winning write contest or no contest. Best wishes in the contest. Have a great evening:-) Alexis

Dear Alexis, so many of us have suffered the ramifications of abuse as children. It only made us the humans we are today. Cuts and bruises heal nd empathy grows from it. Thanks for taking the time to comment 50 views and you are my only comment, so you can imagine how glad I was to read this, Love and hugs, xo
