the yard felt evil

The yard felt evil, I could not explain it Until I turned And saw the clowns On a tiny ferris wheel Turning slowly They were chanting In a monotone kind of way It was the strangest thing I had ever seen Let’s not trick-or-treat here, I whispered to my sister She walked bravely up the porch steps. I turned to flee A bony finger grabbed me. I felt like Gretel. I screamed as loudly as I ever had. Feeling foolish when my sister said “It is a tree branch, silly”. The clowns grinned
