A poem by Abu Nuwas

Don'T Cry For Layla

Don't cry for Layla, don't rave about Hind!
But drink among roses a rose-red wine,
A draught that descends in the drinker's throat,
bestowing its redness on eyes and cheeks.
The wine is a ruby, the glass is a pearl,
served by the hand of a slim-fingered girl,
Who serves you the wine from her hand, and wine
from her mouth — doubly drunk, for sure, will you be.
Thus I am drunk twice, my friends only once:
a favor special, for me alone!

When the poet died – around 814 AD – it was recorded that the reigning caliph of the time, Al-Ma’mun announced, ‘The charm of our time has departed. God’s curse on anyone who has insulted him.’

Arrested for thoughts Of carnal delights Tortured in the heat of a desert night Poisoned, a corpse of poetic disdain They do not care for the verses I write Demons walking on holy water I turned that water to blood red wine They drowned Drinking it in, I laughed then frowned In chains, locked inside of me Desires imprisoned. never set free Walking along streets without destiny Death approached, with an enticing smile The last road traveled, at least With his company awhile

Ah the good old days when poets were forced to flee because of their words. You and Abu are both masters of literary musings. Another amazing poem Arthur.

This is super cool, Arthur. I am so oblivious sometimes. I never even heard of this guy before. But wow, he was good!

Fascinating read, Arthur. It's terrible when we aren't able to voice our feelings in writing. Carnal delights are still taboo. My once question is....the demons walking on water. Is it a reference to what I think it is? Hugs soupie me.
