The White Line

Ever snorted cocaine?
I watched some partiers snort cocaine last night,
in a dark, Manhattan nightclub corner celebration.
But I’ve never crossed that line. The white line.

When offered some, with unctuous camaraderie,
I shrugged and said, “No, sorry, I’m allergic.”
What are you supposed to say, “Crack is whack,”
or “I prefer my coke with rum and ice?”
The white line. I don’t cross the line.

It’s not the first time, of course, I saw more drugs
in high school than I have at Yale. I’ve mostly seen
“study drugs,” there, like provigil, adderall and alza (concerta).
Do they give students an advantage? I don’t know, maybe.
Call me a boxcut or a squarepants, but my parents are doctors,
and I just don’t cross those lines - those little white lines.
.
.
Webster: Unctuous: “an obvious, fake friendliness”

Slang: ‘boxcut’ ot ‘squarepants’ = a square, a no fun party-pooper

*I use artistic license for colors: for instance, adderall can be a blue, orange or yellow pill.

Heya Anais, are you familiar with the song White lines (don’t do it) by Grandmaster Flash, brilliant song, Duran Duran also covered it, but I prefer the former, have a listen on a good hi/fi system or headphones which I know you have, (play it loud) I think you’ll like it, no white lines needed, your life is good and going places, cheers David

A very mature decision on your part, Anais. It seems that so many young people start taking drugs just because everyone around them are. It's even more scary now that so much fentanyl is circulating in our cities.

Whenever I see kids doing things like that, I look around the group and think, "which one of you brought the Narcan?"

It shows how intelligent you really are, Anais. You can't miss what you've never had. Take it from me, drugs are a dead end. I took that turn. Nothing to see. I absolutely love your poem expressing your values. You've got a good head on your shoulders!
