The View

A Narrative... The View At the end of Mulberry street stood a massive old and weathered oak. With an owl rested there every night , just waiting for the right meal to wander by, then silent wings swooped effortlessly down the massacre hardly made a sound at all. I watched from my bedroom window each night to see this act of natural savagery and the feast Even saw a black kitten become the monster's meal Yet never did I think of it as barbaric savagery because man eats whatever he wants with arrogant glee As master over all creatures and with contempt for the weak and lame, Throat cut and bloodied the cow so peaceful becomes next day's burgers and we bat not an eye. Unholy indifference reasoned to be a normal act by we lords of the earth, we takers of all weaker things. Great to find the old Mulberry still a launching pad after these past decades. And man changes not except his clothes and his ideas on his superiority over known and unknown Universe. Robert J. Lindley April 7th. 1992 Narrative, ( Night View And How Harsh Life Oft Is ) Nature revealing that which we too oft seek to deny.....

"the massacre hardly made a sound at all" - I have seen it with lions and tigers in the wild after they pounce, but cannot imagine watching a kitten turning into a meal and not making a sound at all. UGH! Too much killing for me, I am afraid. You are right though, we do eat up those burgers!

Your view is a springboard for your views to come forth, Robert. Nature looks after itself, following the aims of creation...it is us humans who meddle around, and spoil things. # best regards // paul

If we all had to slaughter our own meat half the world would become vegetarian over night. I will eat fish and eggs sometimes as my protein but mushrooms and tofu and avocado are my favorites. I haven't eaten a burger in over thirty years. Predators in the animal kingdom are living instinctively yet I still root for the rabbit to get away because I don't enjoy watching the kill. Your poem is a sensitive wonderfully written look at the beast in ourselves Robert. xxoo

Indeed Lindley... This, out of all your poems, I like the best. It is true to life.

Thank you my friend. True to life and a bit dark/morbid when one thinks of a small kitten being eaten by an owl.

A human is a composite being, a crossroads of beings, so to speak. The mineral, vegetable, animal, as well as the divine and the human itself natures coexist in him. Therefore, it is no wonder that from time to time he acts like a beast. Or god. It's hard to be a human.

Thank you my friend. True that man acts like a beast and oft thinks its the correct path because survival too oft teaches us a very harsh reality.
