First Place
~
I was invited to a party in an upscale place,
the first thing I knocked over was a fancy vase;
feeling too clumsy I was looking for the way out,
when I smashed an expensive lamp with a shout !
Everything went silent and all eyes were on me,
as a lovely translucent lampshade rolled in the debris;
staff quickly ran to remove all traces of the scene,
I stood staring and soon all was tidy and clean !
My date said you better come and sit down,
while I was thinking that soon- I will be having a meltdown;
then, a lady with a big nose said are you the girl who writes,
those sad poems, oh, why not write of life's delights !
I wanted to answer her but she kept talking,
so depressing, mind you, your writing I am not knocking;
as she went on and on each word left a wound and a bruise,
the hurtful insults even left marks on my beloved muse !
I stood up suddenly and excused myself too quickly,
because at this point I was indeed feeling sickly;
finding my date and I made an excuse quite convincing,
I lied to him, of course, definitely, positively wincing !
I could not get away from that party, that place fast enough,
on the verge of tears- oh, why am I not more tough;
but an inner voice was speaking ... write what's in your soul,
and just leave the nasty people to their rude rigmarole !
