This was originally meant for a humorous contest until I noticed that contest could have only 16 lines, but to tell my story well, I need all 32 of these lines, so I am entering my original humorous tale version into Joanna Daniels' Write A Story Poem Poetry Contest

We hoped for our dog Lucy Loo to go outside any time that she needed to. It had to be a small dog door, and so we went to Pet Smart like most people do. We want our two cats to be kept inside. Therefore, the dog’s door needed to be smart! It synched up with her collar to provide the way for only THE dog to depart! One night I searched my house and could not find our ginger cat named Simba. Where was he? I took a flashlight, and it blew my mind to see our cats’ eyes glowing from a tree. That Simba figured out a way to get behind our Aussie dog when she goes out. I guess he lies in wait, and then it’s “ready, set, and go” when Lucy leaves! Yes, I’ve got no doubt. This has to be the way he’s doing it. Our dog’s become his partner now in crime. There seems to be no way to make them quit. With the dog, Simba flees time after time. Good thing that cat’s been fixed and still has claws. Or he’d be hunting female cats in heat, or ending up in some big mean dog’s jaws! Thankfully by dawn, he’s at the door to eat. And so it goes. Each night our one cat must get out, but our white cat never does succumb. Does our white cat, Chico, just lack wanderlust or is he a cat actually dumb? At times our Chico does not seem too bright as Simba is, but I am fine with that. To call something a smart door’s just not right if it cannot outwit a too-smart cat!

Our pets are far from dumb, Andrea. I mean, if I stood in my kitchen licking the back of my palm and wiggling my butt… nobody would say ‘Aww’ and throw me a treat (believe me, I’ve tried), but when a cat does it, it like a free for all at the treat store. ;-) Thoroughly enjoyed this. Congrats

This is so funny, Andrea: A smart door outsmarted by a cat. I’ll bet you’ve been racking your brain for a solution to that. This would also fit observing animals in nature Contest, Good Luck with whichever contest you choose. SuZ

Not surprising your results. And putting it to pen was a good ideal considering it's for another contest.

Cats are very clever and have a will of their own. Simba seems to be extra smart, following Lucy through the small door like a dart. Enjoyed the read… Belle

Andrea! It made my whole day to pop over to read this! We always had indoor cats with two dogs. Thanks for the low-down re smart doors. After 2 decades of thinking we should get one, this poem says NO! Our dogs tho, let the cats go first for everything…not polite, just the cat-titude rules! Great tale! Fun! xoxsally

Cats are ALWAYS smarter than they appear. We've had several over the years and they never cease to amaze me with the craftiness and cunningness. Cute story & best of luck in the contest.

Enjoyed your story very much! Our beagle used to jump, hit his nose on the latch of the gate to escape. Animals are smart and interesting as is your story! Blessings, dear friend!

Andrea, a cute story, a cat's intelligence is almost always underestimated, best of luck in the contest.

Well done Simba. She always got the better of the dog. A lively tale that touches the heart. Great details, too. Hugs xx
