The Story of a Book

If it’s suspense you want, then I’m the one for you. You can keep me at home or take me to the beach. We can spend all day together, or just an hour or two. When you need to get away, I’m always within reach. I sit with the others, hoping soon I’ll be chosen, While, one by one, many more are taken away. What is it about me that keeps me here so frozen? Am I too boring or too long? I wonder every day. I’m no different from the others, as far as I can see. We’re almost all the same, each with a story to tell. Some may say that I’m not like the rest, but I disagree. Maybe it’s what the others do that I don’t do so well. I’m not scary at all like Dean or Stephen over there. Alan, Buck, and Simon all have me beat on funny. I’m not political; about that I have no desire or care. I have no romance, nor any wisdom about making money. What I do have to offer is so much more interesting. If you pick me up, you may not want to put me down. I’ll show you that wherever you go, it’s me you’ll bring On your long trips or even the short ones across town. It’s completely up to you whether I come or stay. I can’t make you decide, but if you don’t, I quit. It’s getting very old sitting here day after day. So, I will just say this: “In the end, the butler did it.”
