The Saddest Christmas of Them All

She wandered in wearing a weary heart unable to mend- I knew there would be a SAD CHRISTMAS around the bend. It started early November and ended late December, oh if only all the drunken moments I didn’t remember. When I strung the lights, I knew she’d be gone soon. It seemed like only yesterday she was happy in June. Days of Summertime lake moments in the afternoon. So I set the evergreen wondering when death will arrive because I knew all the sadness she would never survive. I woke up that Christmas morning in fear and dismay, and I could tell by the look on her face she’d gone astray. Her eyes red from weeping hands shaking from Cabernet. “Will this day turn around under these circumstances?” I felt the anguish of her taking too many suicidal chances. Forsaken was she, feeling abandoned from her family, even though we were the ones who tried to set her free. I needed some reassurance, some renown guarantee. It was when we opened gifts when she began to cry. I knew her heart was poor, but I had no idea why. We all stopped suddenly and could hear a pin drop. I gently comforted her praying she would finally stop, but she never did and all day she cried nonstop. I went to bed that night crying my soul to sleep, and that’s when I heard her begin to weep. I awoke the next morn forlorn and so was she, but she apologized, “I’m so sorry, my loving family…” It was only six days later SHE DIED UNDER A PINE TREE. _____________________________ Date written: December 4, 2018 A Sad Christmas - December 2018 Writing Challenge - Poetry Contest Sponsor: Dear Heart
