The Poet's Treasure - a Poet's Worth

The poet dreams, and with a simple glance at trees or sky or at a mountain spring, begins to write, endeavors to enhance each sight of beauty with imagining. He paints midsummer as a day of gold, the song of birds at twilight as the tune for his beloved, whose aspect is extolled and likened to the splendor of the moon. At times, his heart is pained. It seems that doom pursues him in that chasm where he grieves. He finds he still must write. . . and there may bloom sweet wistful roses on his journal’s leaves. Though meager be his assets, he bequeaths to us a treasure with the words he breathes. For "A Poet's Worth" Poetry Contest

Had to return to his masterpiece for another read today. Reading through your sonnets is like walking through a favorite art museum, just breathing in the air of imagination and creativity, truth and beauty.

You have so many excellent poems about writing poetry, and this one just got added to my list of favorites. The aspect of nature, romance, heartbreak are all covered so splendidly. The key phrase in describing a true poet: "He finds he still must write". Love the couplet with the poet bequeathing a treasure to his readers with the words he breathes. That's what you do, Andrea! A fave.

Enjoy this description of language as cultural treasure. Surprised about the reverse-gender identification. Just curious, why is your poet a "he"?

gerald, in English, when both sexes are mentioned in the singular, we use the masculine form! For example, "If a person wants to write a letter, he must include a stamp." HOwever, I supposed I could redo it in the plural form and just use they and them!!

Well done Andrea. I feel sorry for the folks with appreciation so blighted that they go through life without seeing the beauty and sheer wonder of their surroundings. Love, Joyce
