The old man felt sorry for the caged bird,
but he couldn't free it; he'd given his word.
His wife was so fond of its soulful song
she kept it captive, and he went along.
He could tell the bird felt melancholy,
yet his wife loved her parakeet, Polly.
And he never wanted to see her sad,
for the love of his wife was all he had.
She'd smile on hearing the bird sweetly sing,
and he wouldn't trade that smile for anything.
But his heart wanted to set the bird free,
as nature had intended it to be.
So, to cheer the bird up, he'd oft begin
by playing a tune on his violin.
For, feeling guilty, he tried to atone
by serenading the bird when alone.
