The old man felt sorry for the songbird,
but he wouldn't free it; he'd given his word.
His wife was so fond of its soulful song
that she had it caged, and he went along.
He could tell the bird felt melancholy,
yet his wife loved it, naming it Polly.
And he didn't want her ever to feel sad,
for the love of his wife was all he had.
She'd smile on hearing the bird sweetly sing,
and he wouldn't trade that smile for anything.
But his heart wanted to set the bird free,
as Nature had intended it to be.
So, to cheer the bird up, he'd oft begin
by playing a tune on his violin.
For feeling guilty, he tries to atone;
by playing for the bird when they're alone.
