Notes About The Poem

For Miltonic Sonnet Contest sponsored by: Craig Cornish

The Miltonic Sonnet is:
A quatorzain, enjambment is used to tighten the sonnet,
leaving 14 lines unbroken by stanzas.

It doesn't have to be one sentence but mostly use enjambment
metered, iambic pentameter
Petrarchan rhyme scheme abbaabbacdecde
pivot evolves slowly after line 8

The Memoir

Here in the final pages of her life
She stops to rest a spell on empty lines
Reflecting on the chapters left behind
In valleys of a mind deep in contrite
Where shadows battle with a blinding light
Conflicting egos fighting on through time
Their argument life’s reason and life’s rhyme
They battle for the end that she must write
Two equal pens held tightly in her hand
Tears mingle with the ink spots on the page
One pen telling truth one pen telling lies
Her bleeding words like footprints in the sand
On lines between a novice and a sage
One pen she puts to death before she dies

                     ~~~
Ahhh! Now THIS is poetry! Loved the Ying and Yang conflict here and the mystery at the end. I see some folks think truth survived, but I disagree. Diaries should be burned, not read.
First of all, it is with such pleasure to see your name. I've always admired your poetry, Elaine, and some of us who have been here a long time, have roots in Poetry Soup..... The melancholy feel of this one, I think is real, rich with depth of true disappointment, but also rich with beautiful insight into oneself. You are so gifted!
