Her smile secrets The melancholy and doubt Feelings that erase her courage Make her feel left out Leave her with a darkness Which silhouettes her hope Her faith and assurance The beauty of knowing Light is alive inside, dancing Reflecting a joy so bright Her eyes won’t reveal The anxiety, the fear, the Silence of soft, tender tears Feelings so real and unreal Brought to life by faded dreams All the sorrow – all the rain Washing away even the pain Buried deep within her thoughts Her heart a secret, yearning to be told Her soul a sigh, breathless as love Poured out on the hopeless Waking the light of morning, dawn Erasing the memory of something worth it Something more potent than pain Something alive and dismayed By the disguise, her façade – the mask Surviving her moments of grace Entered in: 2022 Poetry Marathon Mile 19 Poetry Contest Sponsored by: Mark Toney Entered November 3, 2022 Judged on November 11, 2022 Re-Entered in: Writing Challenge - X'd Poems Second Chance Poetry Contest Sponsored by: Constance La France December 4, 2022

A beautiful poem Gina. As we ask, the contractions that arise, to whom do they come and for what purpose of soul learning, yet encased in form, limited, doubt and despair does arise, even as we witness it all in an aspect of surrender, releasing with each breath, defiled outcomes … no matter.

We just never know what's going on in a person's mind. We all wear a mask at times to hide our inner feelings. Your poem touched the inner most depths of the way she felt, fragile and vulnerable. I was touched by this Regina. It is beautifully written and heartfelt.

Regina, Essence of real poetry beyond the façade, beyond a simple mask. Excruciatingly lovely. -Richard
