The Lovely Banquet

I went to a lovely banquet, everything
prepared was so pleasing to the eye.

I saw things that I had never seen
 before.
 Some dishes appeared unusual and
 out of place.
Others looked rare and exotic; I didn't
know whether to eat or stare.

In the end, I chose to indulge myself
in a once in a lifetime feast.

But as I began to eat the different things
 on the menu,
My palette and taste buds shocked and
 deceived me.

The things that appeared rare and exotic
  were bland and flavorless.
And things that seemed rare and unusual,
  and just plain odd,
Had finesse and flavor throughout its core
  and danced on my tongue.

It was the best things I ever tasted; if I went
by their appearance alone, I wouldn't have
  given them a second thought.

What a different creative write this is Alexis my friend things, people, food, all sometimes seem exotic and exciting but like you I prefer the plainer down to earth choice - far more palatable. Hugs and kisses from across the pond. Jennifer.

I worked as a dealer in Atlantic City for fourteen years. The hotels there are known for hosting great dinners and banquets. Usually on Saturday and Sunday nights, they offered the leftover food like steaks and seafood to the employees. Your poem reminded me of that.

That's usually the way it is throughout life. What appears the flashiest isn't really as good as it looks and that which seems ordinary is usually really great. Kind-a think God is telling us something here. Nice write my friend. God Bless, JB

As they always say, don't judge a book by its cover -- or food either. Interesting! :) gw

Very interesting foodie's poem, Alexis. On my ONE cruise I got to take (are THOSE ever coming back), they could make food look SO wonderful, and truly it tasted wonderful, but so too do mac and cheese and ordinary casserole dishes!

Taste test is not always possible but if something doesn’t look appealing I will pass. It’d be rude to take a sniff test in public. Good write, Alexis.
