The Last Page
Early every morning, he started reading the newspaper at four
All by himself, no one else up at that hour
Nice, peaceful and quiet, a good time to think
Did not have any good news in it, advertisements galore
All about the fancy people and the ones in power
By God, he needed more hot coffee to drink
Everything he read just made him mad, even the evening news
Public corruption on a rampage, a robbery here, a murder there
Over crowded jails, and the mayor wants your vote
Thinking at this rate, no wonder everyone is singing the blues
It will be alright, but it will sure going to take a lot of prayer
And praying for those that just missed the boat
Later he turned on the television set to see what he could find
Nothing new there, game shows and old what is her name
Reality show that were just fantasy, soap operas that were gossip
All it was doing was destroying the human mind
Knowing full well who was to blame
Feeling beat down like a stray dog, with the Devil's whip
Then he read "The Bible", needed to hear "The Good News"
He lost all track of time, sat there reading until after midnight
Filled with a Heavenly calmness, was rid of all that rage
Knowing he everything to gain or everything to lose
Reading about the victory and in the end everything would be alright
He just smiled, as he read "The Last Page"
