The Lament of a Veteran

My body is a temple,
That is all but an empty shell
of what I use to be.
Only thoughts to myself,
of years gone by,
Sensing another life at times.
Many call me a hero,
WHere I was feared by my enemy's.
I fought for freedom.
My lifetime was my,
Brother's and Sisters in arms,
The flag was my heart,
Who forever beats within my body,
It calls me to war.
The demons within me,
Won't let me rest,
They threaten me,
They haunt me with glimpses,
Of my past,
Watching me as I experience,
My brother's and Sister's,
Who lay dying in my arms,
As if I'm caught in a time loop,
I can't escape from.
I awake cursing the demons,
Who are laughing in my face,
Knowing that I failed,
My brother's and Sister's.
A slow breath exhales,
As I bow my head and the tears flow.
A fog surrounds me I can not see,
Of soldiers of the past,
Who protect me,
In a circle of hope.
