The King and I
I met a king
of ebony skin
with eyes bright as stars,
twinkling and shining,
descending light
where ever he looked.
And I thought,
where is his queen?
Surely some young princess
has noticed his handsome face
and kingly ways.
So I sought out the answer
and was pleased with it.
The more I was near this king,
the more I wanted to know him
and when I wasn't near him
I felt a deep yearning for him.
I thought about him endlessly
and felt that I should tell him
but I realized it would be in vain
because I was just a fair maiden
who could never capture his attention
for longer than a mere fortnight.
So I concealed my thoughts
and conceded them
to the back of my mind
into the deepest, darkest pits
of my imagination.
Regardless of how I tried,
I couldn't forget him.
And I wondered if this king
of ebony skin,
from African descent,
with eyes bright as stars,
a touch like fire,
a words smooth as water,
fresh from a well,
would accept this maiden,
who is I.
If only he'd accept me,
I'd be his queen.
Destined to stay true
only to him.
while I was pondering these thoughts
my king called called out to me
and fulfilled my heart's desire.
