The House On the Hill

Shall I return… oh shall I return to that house on the hill? It's been my home for many years now – all my life. Why do I fear everything and wish not to return? They are not mean… and certainly there has been no strife, But in looking at that light… almost feels it would burn. Shall I return… oh shall I return to that house on the hill? I stand among the rows of grain… and feel so much at peace. It’s so quiet and still… feels as though time has stopped, I can gather my thoughts to make my understanding increase, Although work must be done, as this grain must be chopped. Shall I return… oh shall I return to that house on the hill? I feel so different and out of place… nothing to discuss, As they are farmers during the day, and furniture at night. If I leave and join the others, I know there’ll be a fuss, And they may even call the law to capture me on sight. Shall I return… oh shall I return to that house on the hill? Why is it so hard to decide?... I know what’s best for me, There is still this attraction; like a moth to a flame. But if I do return, it will be to my end… I believe, All my unique abilities will disappear and flow down the drain. Shall I return… oh shall I return to that house on the hill? I think it’s time to turn around and see my future. We must all turn a corner and make an important decision, As now I’m entering a new life and leaving one of agriculture, To a realm of science and thought… so sad there’s a family division. I shall not return… no, I shall not return to that house on the hill. By: Greg Stanley

I read this piece over a couple of times, (and probably will again). Each time, I saw something different, or maybe something deeper. A great write. Congratulations my friend. Well done.

I really like how you OWNED this poem. You took it as something very personal, a guy needing to break free of his farmer's roots. Very nicely done. I sure am going crazy thinking how to do this one!!
