The Grinch In Me

"Christmas doesn't come from a store but perhaps means a little bit more." Quote from Dr. Seuss's Book, How The Grinch Stole Christmas. ___________________________________ In my childhood- I loved Christmas with joy, but now I hate Christmas . . . I am a Grinch; oh yes, a past so full of glee, of toy, now I just find such pain- my heart does pinch. Other people relish the songs and cheer, but I have built a place to hide away; other people gather family near, not me- I have nothing cheerful to say. I have a box of things Christmas, so old, they bring me tears- sorrows of past great love; I want to crush Christmas and dream thoughts cold, oh red, oh gold, sparkling garnish- a dove. Yes, yes Christmas is not about bought gifts; but LOVE- oh God make me of love that drifts. _______________________ December 12, 2018 Contest: Movie Magic Sponsor: Gregory R Barden Movie and Character: How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Grinch Fourth Place

This is a truly honest piece of work. In all of the frenetic bustle that is the holiday season, it helps to reflect on the simplicity, sentiment, and innocence once harbored -- not to mention the bittersweet adieus we pay that time in our declining years. :( Lovely work.

Keith, thank you for the lovely comment, yes, we must stand back and ask ourselves what Christmas is about. For me it is a sad time of memories but I am trying very hard to put that behind me. I love the song by Faith Hill that I put with my poem too from the Grinch movie ~

Although Christmas is a painful time for many, at least we now know why the Grinch tried to ruin it for everyone. There is such a sadness in your poem, Dear Heart, and you took a very creative approach to the contest. Your theme is developed perfectly. Best wishes for success, my friend. Love, Carolyn

To give gifts but given only with love, no matter how small, but thoughtful, is a sweet part of Christmas, too. Like the wise men's gifts to Jesus and angel's singing. I've had all kinds of Christmases in my long life. You have done some good writing for your contest.

See...true to my word, I have come back again, and am definitely not disappointed! I believe that those who partook of the love and joy of Christmas when they were young, will eventually find good cheer again! Regards // paul

Very touching. There's much about Christmas that can cause one a bad, sad, or otherwise negative mood without their primary focus being love. Your poem is full of emotion that's realness is most palatable. Still, much as I enjoyed the poem, I wish you unexpected, sustaining joy this season. Poetry hugs ... CayCay
