The Good Father
There lives a father named OLIVER whom I know very well.
Clearly a biological one, but OLIVER was never a GOOD father.
OLIVER married the mother of his son, but never respected her.
He spent some time in prison and also was a fugitive for several years.
After OLIVER was released from prison, he and his son had a couple of decent
years that later turned south. I would consider him, not the worst but at best,
a POOR father. He still lives, but is yet estranged from his 26 year old son.
I also know a father named ROBERT even better than I know OLIVER.
ROBERT was married for several years to the mother of his children.
The two of them had a few good years raising the kids together until
things went deeply south for them while the kids were still very young.
He has remained in touch and helped in the support of his three children.
ROBERT takes his fatherhood seriously, but the dye had been cast that
could never be erased. I must say that ROBERT has had many challenges,
and all things considered, I would be inclined to call ROBERT a GOOD father.
Lastly, the father that I know least about and fail to understand, is BENJAMIN.
BENJAMIN never married the mother of his two children, and the relationship
never developed into maturity. BENJAMIN seems to have never had any sense
of responsibility. He had great kids, but showed little affection and rarely even paid them a visit. They are both now grown, and the pain of fatherlessness is clearly showing. I tell you, I do not hesitate to say that BENJAMIN is many points below being a VERY POOR father.
