The Girl In the Picture
She has in her hand a basket of kittens,
Holds one aloft-her gaze fixed tenderly.
All around she is festooned with little pink roses,
Down the path some distance there’s a house that we see.
Her clothes are of an age now long forgotten,
Nostalgic white dress, little jacket trimmed with lace.
A girl in a garden full of charm and beauty
Portrayed with an essence of purity and grace.
On her head pale blue bonnet, covered in violets.
Cascading from it long gold sunlit hair.
Was she real I wondered, the girl in the picture —
Or is it the artist’s heart that is captured there?
