The Gift You Left Behind
Innocence and beauty is what you asked me for
as you lay me on the couch , then across the floor
speaking softly in my ear you never came for air
as I gave up my virginity, I knew you didn't care
The telephone stood silent and the television mute
while all I did was study, a pregnancy took root
you said you needed space and that it had to be
now who was I to stop you and so I set you free
The years have come and gone without a soft reply
although she longed to know she never asked me why
And after all this time I wonder, why did I not flee,
as you stole my innocence, quietly from me ;
Innocence and beauty, is what you asked me for
as you lay me on the couch, then across the floor.
