The Gift

If only we could fly above the treetops Or wander down the endless plain. Take wing beside the golden eagles.. And wander through a cloud of rain. If we could brush the snow capped peak And tumble down the canyon narrow.. With wings of gold brave restless waters And quietly join the swooping sparrow. Man was endowed with heart and mind To think, create, remember, and to love And yet one gift was saved, not for us But for the birds that freely soar above.

This brought to mind a thought a friend once shared with me. I asked him if he had ever wanted to be a bird and just fly free. He said, "Nope, I am free. I wouldn't really want to be a bird because I might be eaten by a cat." LOL we had a great talk that day. Thanks for the memory. This is a lovely poem and the images are so vivid that I could truly see the birds as I did that lovely evening with him. Smiles from Lolita

Beautiful write here, Barbara ... birds are so lucky ... smile ... I wrote them a tribute called "For The Birds" and I always feel a tug when they fly away from my view. Thanks for your comment on the diamante(s) ... doing them feels like a refresher course in English ... LOL ... too many adjectives, nouns, and verb stuff but they are fun to do.

Now yer talkin' animals, now yer talkin' love. I'm crazy about animal poems. We feed hundreds of birds, squirrels, opossums, and stray cats every day in the back yard and on our front porch. The winter is so bad the birds are eating the cats' kibbles and wet food. Love, daver
