Announcement to all Outer party members: Thomas Woodward is dead. He is an unperson. You are to incinerate anything in your possession that might be contaminated with his DNA. All memories of him are to be forgotten. It is rumored that some of you have been infected by his mentally deranged rants and poetry. More specifically, that a few pages from his personal journal may have been copied and passed among you. He was a madman, an agent of Goldstein. His confession of his many crimes was broadcast publicly, as you are all aware. You have heard that he wrote: "Happiness is the freedom to say, to think, to be and to do whatever one wishes." Such untruths have long been exposed and denounced by the Party. "Individuality is the future," another untruth propagated by a filthy mind. The Party has long held that oppression is freedom, and that individuality is delusion. There is no I, only we. There is no individual, only the collective. To think independently is to promote chaos, anarchy. The collective mind promotes peace, unity. The Party must survive, therefore the Party must remain united. Again we say, oppression is freedom. By bringing every thought, dream and aspiration into captivity, thereby obliterating individuality, the Party member becomes part of the unified whole and is thus free to love Big Brother with all his mind, heart, and strength. To love and serve the Party in perfect obedience is the pinnacle of existence. It is the greatest of all freedoms. Thomas Woodward is dead. He is an unperson. In fact, he never existed at all. One further announcement: Victory gin rations are to be increased by fifty percent beginning tomorrow. *artwork deviantart

I never did read Orwell's 1984 but familiar with the story line from contemporary media. This is a thought provoking piece especially if you consider some of the audience having obtained 'freedom' in recent history....

For some reason whenever i read poes eureka, i think of your work, and your prose, you sound a bit like him. And i must say i feel the cleverness of how youv conveyed truth in this. Powerful write it is! And i must agree with the rest that george orwell did portray the reality so well in his writes. As i studied his work too. I must also quote “ oppression is freedom. By bringing every thought, dream and aspiration into captivity, thereby obliterating individuality“ whoa! Soul hitting! Love it

Tom, the painting is faintly reminiscent of Navalny. The story is very timely. You got some very interesting comments. The fact that life and what you have here inspired by 1984 mirror each other should be a sobering reminder to everyone that we need to be very careful with our democracy and protect independent sources of news. TY!!

[ Part ii ~ (See: Part i ) ] . . . I, and all of my "Brothers-At-Arms" still 'Stand At The Ready' but, in truth, I never absorbed, personally, the particular wisdom from those pages. Today, I fashion myself an "Anarchist", in the likes of Emma Goldman¹ because, 'by any other name' "THE STATE" must reek of fear, but Jesus, through his primary proxy, teaches us that: "Perfect Love casts out fear". Thanks for this Reminder. Keep the faith along with me also. We are the Earth's best expression ~ seeding the stars! ____ * 1. ". . . and the word was made flesh and dwelt among us" so we've drowned the heavens in a cacophony ever since, because a perfect world is perfectly silent. This from a member of the colonized - the conquered, by use of the oppressors tongue made manifest ~ "Good" is a noun". - Robert Pirsig

[ Part i ] ___ By any other name - What is "The State"? The novel, "1984" was on the Freak's (hippies) collective 'Reading-List' in the midst of our "Revolution". The apparent dissolution of our collective efforts should not be mistaken for its demise.

I read and studied this novel 1984 of George Orwell at university many years ago.. I truly don't remember the plot but what I know is that it is a very revolutionary masterpiece.. Orwell was ahead of his time writing about human beings as followers and oppressed.. We are living that now under the cover of Technology, globalisation, dehumanisation, Addiction.. we are enslaved thinking that we are free! I so much enjoy and like your great and enlightening work Tom! Best regards. God bless you

orwell is a fave of mine so i enjoyed reading your take on the classic 1984, which i believe he wrote as a warning, though the way things are heading it may well become a grim reality very soon...

Your poem evokes a chilling and dystopian atmosphere, reminiscent of George Orwell's "1984", where individuality and freedom of thought are suppressed by a totalitarian regime... It serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of totalitarianism and the erosion of fundamental freedoms in the pursuit of power and control. It prompts reflection on the importance of vigilance in safeguarding individual liberties and resisting the forces that seek to extinguish them...

Poor Thomas Woodward, he only stood for freedom of individualism. I enjoyed his amusing personality, but he became too Thomasee, overbearing and doctrinaire with little flair. He had been warned & yet....entitled we are to our thoughts & personality, but everyone's freedom of expression must be respected that is key. True democracy becomes contentious and messy but that's the nature of democracy. Very clever and creative, points well taken,Luv ya, ~Anaya

The only thing I did not agree with was that one can do whatever one wishes...it's a recipe for anarchy. :)

Dear Tom, a chilling masterpiece! The starkness is captivating, echoing the oppressiveness of 1984 perfectly. It sent shivers down my spine, especially seeing Winston's words twisted by the Party. "Victory Gin" ending is darkly brilliant. Bravo! - Blessings, Daniel

brilliant and creative poem, Tom. At first I thought the poem was a bit like the Twilight Zone but then realized it's a parody of sorts with an undertow of truth similar to Ayn Rand's "Anthem" or "We the Living." Your poem also smacks of "Brave New World"--all 'fictional' works about the loss of personal freedoms. Powerful words, Tom. Have a pleasant evening, Sara
