Notes About The Poem

Edward's Pick a title Vol 57 Contest ~ 5/16/26

The Geometry of a Shared Bed

After years of fighting for the covers
You'd think by now we'd be estranged lovers
But when we do the math
We end feelings of wrath
A compromise in time one discovers

Geometry explores shape ~ position
A shared bed often requires permission
Do you share equal space
Do you sleep face to face
Does doing math require a partition

It's not a good night when there's bed warring
Being poked with elbows can leave scarring
Just say, "Good night my sweet"
Then, he might warm your feet
Sleep is more tranquil when there's no sparring

Problem snoring is not easily solved
It's said that from apes, humans have evolved
When it comes to bed wars...
Which gender came from Mars
Math won't help a marriage being dissolved

When seeking the root of an equation
You must search for an equalization
A smile, wink or a nudge
Can make the numbers budge
Let's label the term, 'friendly persuasion'

"Just stay on your side. I won't be confined"
Geometry codes are not ties that bind
Don't count on theory
Cuddle with your dearie
You'll both benefit when you are aligned

You can't blend geometry and romance
The marriage bed will never stand a chance
If you want to aspire
to spark flames of desire
A shared bed is cold after a war dance

If when in bed, harsh words are full of wrath
Stop the quarrel by taking a new path
Geometry won't work
You will get called a jerk
If you are a bed hog... you do the math

Lin, a very thorough, humorous, and mathematically influenced exploration of night troubles. For some instances, soundproof walls won't be enough. We might need sound engineers to install an anti-noise system. When it comes to position, perhaps scientists who design earthquake resistant buildings can come in and do some magic. I'm actually surprised a bed manufacturer hasn't come up with a shock system to keep offenders in line. I can imagine the ads. Hope you are well and sending smiles!!

Lin, haha, this is so true. I love my hubby but prefer to sleep in the bed alone for best sleep. I think a king sized bed would help. :)

haha Tania. Been there and done that but a king size bed only helped with movement. They're not soundproof. There are perks to sleeping alone. Thanks, and hugs.

Who thought there would be compromise in the marriage bed…after making love, we rearrange ourselves, and after many years, do we go to our sides or link hearts…perhaps both. I love this write! Great!

Hi Lin you don't know how much I laughed and enjoyed this poem. I have a relation with whom sleeping behavior we have spoken, she admits to taking the lions share of the bed but hubby accepts gracefully. Husbands that snore, well pretend you have railway lines near you and slowly your brain adjusts. Also wake them up if you can't sleep or you pretend to snore loudly yourself. Miraculously hubbys snoring improves and sometimes dissapears, and problem solved. Hugs Jennifer.

Thanks a lot, Tom. Thought I’d go a different route than I usually write for Edward. When I saw this was one of the themes I knew where I was going with it. ;-)

Thanks for laughing at my bedroom humor. I'm not at all sure Edward will appreciate Limericks for his contest but I've been writing some deep, perhaps abysmal lines so I thought I'd bring something more lighthearted to the soup kitchen. The feminine strength we spoke about earlier plays out in these lines. There IS a lot to be said for living alone... actually... there are many things to be enjoyed! To place or not.... that's not the question. It's all about having fun and sharing it. Merci for your laughter and your thoughts.
