The Empty Stocking

There was a babe Not unlike others Who wished upon a star A Christmas wish Heard by most mothers As that’s how mothers are The child wished for So many things But most of all, his mom She faced alone All that life brings In sweet demeanor, calm On Christmas Eve Her tears did flow No money for a tree No gifts to wrap Just rags to sew A stocking, just for me And though there were Treats, precious few Some candies, fruit and such With love, it swelled Empty no more I cherish it so much

Many of us, in my case it's my Mother, have parents, grandparents and other loved ones who have shared just such impoverished Christmas. My Mom got a penny and an orange. This is sweetly touching on what to many was a lived truth, this is relevant and emotionally lovely. Poetry hugs ... CayCay

With this poem you touch so many hearts who can relate to stories like the one you told here. It feels so real..a family will always treasure the company of each other..even if the stocking are empty. Well said, Mike.

What beautiful memories in this poem. There are ways to make Christmas happen without big dinners, presents or decorations; your Mom knew the secret.

A heartfelt poem Mike, it is such a wonderful gift to look back and see how appreciative we were with so little - yet we were probably emotionally richer than the children who have everything materially yet little attention from their parents:-( hugs Jan xx
