The Ecstatic Calliope
"Here rise to life again, dead poetry!
Let it, O holy Muses, for I am yours,
And here Calliope, strike a higher key,
Accompanying my song with that sweet air
which made the wretched Magpies feel a blow
that turned all hope of pardon to despair"
—Dante, "Purgatorio", Canto I, lines 7 to 12
"The Ecstatic Calliope"
Blue Mountains call
Hawk in a Big Blue Sky cries
“Follow the Road, Follow Me”
Old Man Time sits with all three
of his
Books of Life
on his knees
And here she sits
in the
Train of Thought
A Black Swan singing
with strange bedfellows
The Swallows of Destiny
and Wolves on soft paw
in silent prisons they're tort
Blue Mountains call
Three Sisters Praying silently
Train Tracks speeding
now passing an ancient cemetery
Pinnaroo Palm Tree
cornerstone dry dirt plot
scattered leaves
THEY
are a story
written on
Speckled Black Marble
Feather quills and ink pots
Old Man Time sits with all three
of his
Books of Life
on his knees
The Sisters of Fate
bemoaning their destiny
One, two and three
Euchre, the Tempest cries
The Hidden Bird
is Calliope
The two absent angels watch on
as the girl looks out over the tracks
to Horizons of Trees
while the Winter Wind whistles it's pleas
You could be the Lightening Storm
Powerful heart that is free
Blue Mountains call
they are calling to thee
Hawk in a Big Blue Sky cries
“Follow the Road, Follow Me”
Calliope sits in a Runnaway Train
Black Ravens rustling their feathers
fast flying off her page
they are leaving a secret trail
Wings remain protected and loved
dry from the sting of the rain
She slowly and silently
lifts her veil
sweeps muddied secrets
under the rug
Writing with all of her muses
Blind Men are now turning
Love Spells cast
reckless and ruinous
Inside dead passions are burning
She lifts the lid from the jar gingerly yearning
The Ecstactic Calliope
sets her Bees free
(Lovejoy-Burton, August 2018)
The Italian poet, Dante Alighieri, in his Divine Comedy, refers to Calliope.
1. Calliope is usually seen with a writing tablet in her hand. At times, she is depicted carrying a roll of paper or a book or wearing a gold crown. She would also be seen with her children.
