The Castle
by Robert J (Bob) Moore © 2019
My dad made me a castle, on his fretsaw in the shed
with battlements and ramparts, and a drawbridge painted red
I loved that wooden castle, guess I was nine or ten
and my dad had something that he loved\, his favourite fountain pen
A friend called Norman Dover, who lived just down the street
was swapping all his comics, and some of them were neat
I had nothing I could swap, Norm had read all mine
so I went searching through the house, some swap goods trying to find
I saw my father’s favourite pen, didn’t even think it over
took it and ran out the house, to look for Norman Dover
my dad would think he’d lost it, these thoughts were in my head
he’ll never know I took it, that’s what my mind said
dad found out, I don’t know how, never said a word, nor swore
he just picked up my castle, and went right out the door
he went to Norman Dovers house, and said “I hear you have my pen
I will give you this castle” you give it back to me then
Norman agreed. The swap was made, never spoken of again
but I never stole another thing, I remembered all that pain
my dad was tough, I understood, what I had done was wrong
but the lesson just had to be learned, and I’ve remembered all life long
What you do can cost you, and if you should get caught
just take your punishment as you should, its life’s lessons being taught
