This is an experimental poetry incorporating the chiasmus pattern of rhetoric, in which two or more clauses are structured in reverse order, creating a mirror-like symmetry (ABCCBA).

The theme of this poem is "the call", which is the standard beginning of a typical "hero's journey" narrative, and each verse follow a chiasmus pattern:

  • verse 1: (A) mysterious origin of the call (B) impact of the call on the self
  • verse 2: (A) a great destiny pointed to by the call (B) apprehension towards the challenges that the call inevitably impose
  • verse 3: (A) the need for endurance (B) the ups and downs of the journey
  • Interspersed between the (A) & (B) theme in all three verses is a description of the nature of the voice of the call (C), and the content of the call serves as the refrain that ends each verse.

I hear a voice in the dark of night I hear it speak my name ‘Tis but a whisper, soft yet clear By which it did my soul ignite Though I know not whence it came ‘Prithee, child, come with me See the blessed life of eternity’ I yearn for that glorious promise Yet fear the deep dark yonder Still I am drawn, the voice calls on Though joy may seem as though amiss Thence shall find the greatest wonder ‘Prithee, child, come with me See the blessed life of eternity’ What then shall be, this journey to forbear That which brought forth both dread and awe Echoes resound, and this I found That there awaits, past hope and despair The radiant triumph, enduring, forevermore ‘Prithee, child, come with me See the blessed life of eternity’

Captivating poem. Is this a specific form of poem?

Thanks. It's not a specific form that I know of, though. I was just experimenting with the chiasmus pattern in rhetoric and tried to incorporate it them in poetry, while also adding some rhyming scheme into the mix.
